The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), with about 320 million people, covers 2.57 million square kilometres, and extends into Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. It stretches across Southeast Asia, South Asia and southwest China.
The Mekong River is an important river in Asia. Its estimated length is 4,880 kilometers. It originates in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and runs through China's Yunnan province as well as Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
The Greater Mekong Subregion covers a wide range of climate types and a variety of geographical features. It has abundant water resources, biological resources, mineral resources and has considerable potential for economy development.
There are a broad range of nationalities, customs and religious practices across the subregion.
The GMS is seen as having enormous trade and investment opportunities. It is expected to become a huge market in the 21st century.
