The GMS Summit is the highest decision-making body of the GMS economic cooperation.
The summit is held once every three years. Member states take turns, in alphabetical order, hosting the event.
The Ministerial Meeting is held once a year. The thematic forums and working groups are under the Ministerial Meeting. The first summit was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Nov 3, 2002
The leaders of the GMS countries’ leaders summed up the achievements and successful experiences as well as confirmed the cooperation prospects and commitment over the past 10 years in order to further strengthen the bonds among the six GMS countries.
Former premier Zhu Rongji attended the summit and delivered a keynote speech. He urged Mekong countries to strengthen cooperation, make use of their comparative advantages and speed the pace of economic growth.
The summit has approved the Subregion Development Strategic Framework for the next 10 years.
Some GMS countries, including China, have signed the GMS transport agreement which aims to facilitate transportation among the member states.
They also signed an electric power trade agreement.
The Second GMS Economic Cooperation Summit was held in Kunming, the capital of China’s southwestern province of Yunnan, on July 4-5, 2005.
Premier Wen Jiabao spoke at the opening ceremony.
The six GMS countries have signed also cooperation agreements on passenger and freight transport, animal disease prevention and control, and information superhighway construction, among other accords.
