In 1992, with Asian Development Bank (ADB) assistance, six countries - Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam - entered into a program of subregional economic cooperation, designed to enhance economic relations among the countries.
The idea of the Economic Corridor was proposed at the eighth Ministerial Meeting of the GMS in 1998. Aimed at facilitating cooperation among GMS countries and promoting exchanges via the combination of the transportation corridors and economic development.
There are three segments to the corridor development plan – the construction of transportation corridors, logistics corridors and finally overall economic corridors.
According to the overall layout of the GMS transport network, the region currently includes three major economic corridors – the North-South Economic Corridor, the East-West Economic Corridor and the South Economic Corridor.

The first GMS Economic Corridors Forum, which promoted the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries' economy growth, was held in China's Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center on June 6, 2008, the Yunnan Daily reported.
China Premier Wen Jiabao suggested the setting up of the first GMS Economic Corridors Forum when he attended the third GMS Leaders Meeting in Vientiane in Laos on March 31. Leaders of the other countries at the meeting actively supported his suggestion, the report said.
The theme of the forum was cooperation and mutual benefit as well as balanced and sustainable development.
The forum is aimed at establishing an effective cooperation mechanism between China and other GMS countries, it said.
